This project began in summer 2019, through early conversations with the director, whose vision was to explore King Lear through the lens of American stereotypes.
This approach drew me in for its boldness in confronting taboos through a classical text.

Visual references to American iconography and political rituals add another layer to Lear’s unraveling.

The Modular Theater's unique structure shaped the design from the start. Rather than imposing a concept,
I worked with the space, carving the set into its architecture, to support function and narrative flow.

A woman singing or speaking on stage with a microphone stand nearby and a man in a white coat in the background against a dark wooden wall.
A man sitting alone at a table on a stage with wooden slats and shadows, with a small animal figurine nearby.
The stage features two performers, one sitting and one standing, with a hay bale, a chair, and a microphone stand illuminated by theatrical lighting casting striped shadows. The backdrop is made of wooden slats.
A person wearing a white coat and a brown hat extending their right arm behind wooden slats, with hay on the ground behind the slats.
A man in a beige trench coat, dark pants, a tie, and a brown hat stands against a modern architectural background with wooden slats and beige panels.

I was drawn to raw, unfinished materials, especially wood, to reflect themes of power, decay, and exposure.
I also explored the idea of theater within theater, focusing on how the audience's physical relationship/distance to the stage could intensify the story's emotional weight.

Two performers wearing trench coats and hats singing or speaking into microphones on a stage with shadow puppets projected on the ceiling and a person taking a photo in the background.
Audience seated in a modern theater with wooden slat walls and backlit ceiling, watching a performance or presentation.
Theatrical performance on stage with actors, audience in foreground, wooden wall backdrop, and stage lighting.
A dark theater with a wooden stage and stage equipment, including a person on the upper level taking a photo, visible in the background.
Actors performing a scene on a stage with wooden paneling and striped flooring, with audience members in silhouette watching.
A large stage with a wooden wall backdrop and a screen displaying a large, monochrome image of a head in profile. On the stage, a person stands at a microphone, and other people are present, some holding lights. The scene appears to be part of a performance or presentation in a dark room.
A theatrical performance on stage with two actors; one actor stands with arms outstretched, and the other is kneeling, both near straw bales and a wooden chest, illuminated by stage lighting, with an audience in front.
